BEFORE THE MOVE
Six to Eight Weeks Before Moving Day:
• Create a "Moving" file to keep track of estimate, receipts,
inventories, legal documents and other moving records.
• Organize all important documents in a fire-safe container. These
documents should include birth certificates, wills, marriage/divorce
certificates, passports, school records, medical records, dental
records, pet records, home purchase/sale papers, stock certificates,
financial records, insurance policies, and social security cards.
• If you are moving to a new city, begin compiling medical and
dental records and ask your current physicians for references or
referrals for your new area. (Don't forget your pets' records too!)
• Give daycare a written notice of withdrawal and begin the search
for a new daycare in your new location.
• Notify the post office of your move. You can complete the Change of Address form online at United State Postal Service.
• Have all of your children's school records transferred to the new
school(s).
• Arrange for transfer of your auto insurance and begin setting up
your new home insurance.
• Cancel or transfer any memberships such as health clubs or any
other organizations for which you pay a fee.
• Make a list of all the people you will need to notify when you move. For example, family, friends, businesses, etc.
• Arrange for hotels, rental cars and/or temporary housing as
needed.
• Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for New Resident
package for your new area.
• Prepare a floor plan of your new home and decide which rooms will
serve what purposed.
• Begin researching moving companies. Remember to check for
adequate insurance and ask for references to check on the
experience others had. If your company is paying for your
relocation, check with their policies on moving companies.
• Take an inventory of each room.
• Donate, throw away, or have a garage sale to eliminate all items
that you do not need or want to take with you.
• Begin using the last of your perishable products.
Four to Six Weeks Before Moving Day:
• Begin collecting boxes and other packing supplies. If you can, try to
purchase all our boxes from the same place. This will make them
easier to stack and organize in the moving vehicle since they are
the same size. See our Packing Tips for more information on packing
your home.
• Begin packing items that you will not need before the move. Mark
all boxes with the location they will go to in the new home.
• Schedule to have your utilities disconnected after your move date.
• Schedule to have your utilities connected at your new home a
couple of days before your move-in date.
• Cancel or transfer any recurrent deliveries or services to your home
such as water, newspaper, or lawn services.
Two to Four Weeks Before Moving Day:
• Make sure all items such as dry cleaning, alterations, etc. have
been picked up. Return any library books or other borrowed items. Collect any barrowed items from friends and neighbors.
• Have your auto registrations transferred if applicable.
• Clear our safe deposit boxes and transfer all accounts to your new
city. Order new checks with your new address.
• Confirm all travel arrangements.
• Have an informal going away party for you and your children. Invite
all the friends and family you will be leaving behind. Keep it simple
since you are only days away from moving day.
One Week Before Moving Day:
• Finish packing. Prepare a box with all of your essential supplies that
you will need immediately upon move-in. Mark this box as "load
last." Pack your suit case and any valuables separately.
• Make an inventory list of all boxes, furniture and other items that do
not fit in a box.
• Make sure all your prescription are filled and then transferred to a
pharmacy near your new home.
• Begin making a "Survival Box" for the move. This box should include
items such as a copy of all moving documents, first aid kit, toiletries
(Don't forget towels and toilet paper!), paper goods for the
kitchen, snack food and drinks, tool kit, toys for the children, paper,
pens, tape, scissors, can opener, bottle opener, alarm clock,
flashlight, trash bags, address book, spare car keys, phone chargers,
pet food, medication, etc.
• Set aside a box of cleaning supplies and your vacuum cleaner.
• Confirm all reservations and plans with the moving company.
• Disassemble items such as furniture.
• Clean and defrost refrigerator and freezer one or two days before
the move. |
